“Let’s get you into the shower before we eat,” Kaden said, helping her on with her coat. He considered fussing at her for being outside without it, but realized she wouldn’t have been able to work while wearing her heavy parka. At least she’d worn it for the short walk from the clinic to the barn.
Kaden hadn’t known the woman for a full day, and already knew she thought her own comfort wasn’t as important as the health of the animals left in her care. While he admired the hell out of her, he was going to make sure she got the attention she needed until she tossed him out.
The thought of leaving her didn’t sit well, though. What would happen when he was gone? Would Evan come after her? Would she continue to work herself sick? He wasn’t sure about Evan, but knew the latter was true. Aside from that, he wanted to know more about her. He wanted to kiss her again, and even take things a little further this time. Maybe show her that spankings weren’t always for punishment.
He wanted to introduce Jennifer to his parents, which was the last thing he should want, given how his relationship with Brittany ended. Parental introductions should be for women he had some interest in, yet he couldn’t deny what he felt.
The moon peeked above the trees, gleaming brightly in the late afternoon sky. Though it wasn’t a shooting star, he made a wish anyway.
Wishes don’t always come true, though, and he scowled when he saw a man in a police uniform waiting inside the clinic. He tucked Jennifer under his arm and glared. The wedding ring on the officer’s thick finger just barely kept a possessive growl at bay.
Wriggling free, Jennifer walked forward, her hand outstretched. “Hey, Mike. How did it go with Evan?”
Giving her hand a quick pump, Mike took off his hat. “Well enough, I guess. Chelsea wasn’t hurt, which is good. We gave him a citation for shooting Princess, and he’ll have to appear before a judge, but he’s claiming it was accidental. Chelsea refused to say otherwise.” He shrugged and grimaced. “I’m afraid there isn’t much we can do.”
“Fuck. I guess I’m glad he hasn’t hurt her, but he’s going to and—”
“You and I both know that,” Mike interrupted. “But unfortunately, we can’t do anything until Chelsea decides to let us help her and presses charges.” Turning to Kaden, he said, “I can’t get a tow truck out until the roads are plowed, but I can give you a ride into town if you’re ready to go.”
Kaden wanted to smile at Jennifer’s language. It was so incongruous with her childlike appearance. He wouldn’t chide her for it, though. The word fit the situation. “If Dr. Dane is agreeable, I’m going to hang around.”
Jennifer frowned. “You don’t have to stay here, Kaden. I won’t be offended, and I know you must have better things to do than stay in a vet clinic for Christmas.”
“Nope,” he said, catching her under his arm and kissing the top of her head.
